Diagnostic images reveal brain disruptions after a concussion

According to a new orthopaedic research in the journal Radiology, patients who experience concussions may exhibit brain disruptions on an MRI afterward. These findings may provide scientists with the necessary information to detect and treat their occurrences.

Post-concussion syndrome is when an individual who has a traumatic brain injury also experiences a headache as a result, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. Most of these patients lose some consciousness and cannot remember the event that caused their injury.

The study's investigators compared 23 patients who experienced symptoms after a head injury against a control group, and found that the networks in the brain that communicate were disrupted after a concussion. Such impaired function leads the brain to compensate by tapping into other areas in the organ.

"Conventional imaging with CT or MRI is pretty much normal in [mild traumatic brain injury] patients, even though some go on to develop symptoms, including severe cognitive problems," said researcher Yulin Ge, M.D. "We want to try to better understand why and how these symptoms arise."
