Aerobic exercise proves beneficial to weight loss

According to new sports medicine research published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, aerobic exercise, such as walking, running and swimming, is better than resistance training for the purposes of burning fat and losing weight.
Researchers from Duke Medicine assigned more than 200 adults who were either overweight or obese into one of three exercise training groups, which focused on resistance training, aerobic exercise or both. They discovered that the participants who engaged in aerobic training alone or along with resistance training lost more weight than those who only did resistance training.
"Given that approximately two-thirds of adults in the United States are overweight due to excess body fat, we want to offer clear, evidence-based exercise recommendations that will truly help people lose weight and body fat," said lead author Leslie Willis, M.S.
In addition, more than one-third of American adults, as well as about 17 percent of children and adolescents, are obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Being overweight significantly increases individuals' risks for heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.
